Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been elected unopposed as the Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council.

Shah will succeed current ICC Chair Greg Barclay and will assume the role on December, 1, the ICC said in a statement on Tuesday.

Barclay on August 20 had revealed that he would not seek a third term and would step down at the conclusion of his tenure in November.

“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” said Jay Shah. “I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”

It is worth mentioning here that the BCCI secretary was the sole nominee for the chairmanship.

Following his election, Shah vowed to expand the global reach and popularity of cricket, especially with its upcoming inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics.

“While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide. The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 represents a significant inflection point for the growth of cricket, and I am confident that it will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways,” the BCCI secretary said.

In 2022, he was re-elected as BCCI secretary until 2025.

According to the report, two companies, Bright Star and Moonlight Traders, are allegedly transferred Rs 72.83 billion out of Pakistan while importing solar panels, which they sold for Rs 45.61 billion domestically.

PAK v BAN: Shahid Afridi questions Pakistan’s strategy in first Test

shahid afridi, first test, bangladesh, shan masood,

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi on Sunday raised concerns over Pakistan’s strategy after they were thrashed by Bangladesh in the first home Test in Rawalpindi.

Earlier, Bangladesh defeated the Shan Masood-led side by 10 wickets after chasing the 30-run target without losing a wicket.

The visitor had bowled Pakistan out for 148 runs during their second innings as spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz returned with the figures of 4-21, Shakib Al Hasan picked three wickets, while Shoriful Islam, Nahid Rana and Hasan Mahmud bagged one each.

Reacting to the historic defeat, Shahid Afridi said that the 10-wicket defeat raised questions over the decisions leading to the preparation of such a pitch along with Pakistan’s strategy to go with four pacers and no frontline spinner.

“A 10-wicket defeat raises serious questions about the decision to prepare this type of pitch, select four fast bowlers, and leave out a specialist spinner,” he wrote in a post on X.shahid afridi, pak v ban

It is worth noting here that red-ball skipper Shan Masood had admitted that the home side got it wrong by not picking a frontline spinner in the playing XI.

“Looking at the pitch, we expected the pitch to do a bit more. Secondly, I thought with three fast bowlers, you were going to be pushing them to the limit and that would mean that the spinner would also have to operate at around 25-30 overs a day,” he said in a post-match presentation.

According to Shahid Afridi, lack of awareness about home conditions has also played a significant role in Pakistan’s maiden defeat to Bangladesh in Tests.

“That said, you cannot take the credit away from Bangladesh for the brand of cricket they played throughout the Test,” the former captain stated.

Today’s defeat was the first time Bangladesh won a Test match against Pakistan as the previous 13 meetings between the two sides ended in 12 victories for Pakistan and one match was drawn.

The two teams will face off again in the second Test at the same venue from August 30 to September 3.

Starbucks to Charbucks

Starbucks to Charbucks in Taos

After two arson attacks at a Starbucks construction site in Taos, New Mexico, a developer is trying again to build the chain’s first drive-through cafe in the mountain town with a history of revolts and opposition by some to national chains.

It did not take long for locals in this community of 6,500 to come up with a nickname for the would-be coffee shop: “Charbucks.” Meanwhile, the building contractor from Albuquerque, the state’s largest city, has installed video cameras and a security guard sleeps at the site in a camouflage trailer.

Just over a mile north of the site of the store, which Starbucks hopes to open in the spring of 2025, patrons at one of Taos’ oldest independent coffee shops are tight-lipped about the attacks.

“We don’t know who did it, but we loved it,” said Todd Lazar, a holistic healer, as he chatted with other regulars on a bench outside the World Cup, just off Taos’ central plaza.

Their conversation echoes criticism Starbucks faced as it moved into Europe and Asia that the U.S. coffee chain clashes with local culture and will shovel money out of communities. Starbucks operates or licenses around 39,500 cafes worldwide.

Stickers plastered on locally owned businesses show the Starbucks logo – which features a mermaid – on fire, with the mermaid’s face replaced by La Calavera Catrina, a skull character associated with Mexico’s Day of the Dead and that country’s national identity.

After the first fire in August 2023, the word “NO” preceded by an expletive was spray-painted on the partially burned structure intended to be a Starbucks.

From the 1680 Indigenous Pueblo Revolt against Spanish settlement to the 1847 Taos Revolt against U.S. occupation and more recently an arson attack on a development tycoon and opposition to a billionaire’s ski resort development, Taos locals have resisted outside forces.

“Taos is a dynamic and volatile contact zone between different groups, imperial powers, ecotones,” said Sylvia Rodriguez, emerita professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico who has conducted research on her home town of Taos for decades.

Located 7,000 feet (2,134 meters) above sea level in northern New Mexico’s high mountain desert, Taos is known for its UNESCO World Heritage Site Native American settlement, art scene and steep ski runs.

The area also has deep social inequalities and disconnect between Indigenous, Hispano – descendants of colonial settlers – and other communities, with New Mexico’s highest property crime rate.

People like Lazar complain that a wave of remote workers during and after the pandemic are driving demand for national chains and exacerbating housing shortages common in U.S. West resort towns.

Taos’ town council supported the store on grounds it would provide employment and tax revenue, according to Christopher Larsen, the town’s economic development director

“NOT COOL”

World Cup owner Andrea Meyer said jobs were not the problem.

“People are showing up saying ‘I’d love to work here, I can’t afford to live here,'” said Meyer, who runs a cash-only cafe with no Wi-Fi so as to encourage patrons to talk to one other.
Few working households, can afford Taos’ average home price of $460,000. Around a third of housing units sit vacant, some as second homes and vacation dwellings, others after traditional Hispano families left the area, or other factors, according to census data.

Two or three national chains pulled out of Taos projects after Starbucks burned a second time on Oct. 23, 2023, according to Larsen.

“The feeling is that Taos doesn’t want corporate America,” he said.

Starbucks spokesman Sam Jefferies said employee safety was its top priority and it would work closely with police once the store opened. No one has been injured in the fires.

The town has licensed Starbucks outlets in two supermarkets. Jefferies said the performance of cafes in nearby towns was a factor in opening a Taos store.

Based on news reports over the last three decades, Taos appears to be the only place in the world where a future Starbucks cafe has been burned to the ground.

Neither contractor Hart Construction nor Arizona-based developer and building owner Clint Jameson responded to requests for comment. On his company website, Jameson, who plans to lease the property to Starbucks, describes himself as “relentless” and a “development maverick.”

The town and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have offered a $30,000 reward for information on the fires. Police believe they know the culprit, or culprits, but lack evidence to place them at the site during the blazes, Larsen said. Taos Police Chief John Wentz declined to comment. ATF spokesman Cody Monday said the agency continued following leads and searching for the suspect or suspects.

At the Coffee Apothecary a mile south of the town’s central plaza, owner Pablo Flores vouched for demand for Starbucks-like drinks such as iced caramel frappes, which he tells disappointed customers he does not serve.

The specialty coffee roaster lamented the cookie-cutter sameness of national chains sprouting south of town but abhorred their destruction. He saw the fires as an example of how dialogue has broken down amid political polarization across the country.

“Taos is changing and if you don’t like the way it’s changing, do not support that business,” said Flores, whose family has lived in Taos for generations. “Don’t burn it down, that’s not cool.”

The Impact of OTT Platforms on the Film Industry

OTT Platforms and the Film Industry

The advent of Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms has dramatically reshaped the landscape of entertainment consumption, particularly for film lovers. These digital platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+, have offered audiences unprecedented access to a vast library of movies, TV shows, and original content.

This shift has significantly impacted the habits of cinema-going audiences and the broader movie market.

The convenience and flexibility offered by OTT platforms have revolutionized the way people watch movies. With just a few clicks, viewers can access their favorite films or discover new ones at their convenience, eliminating the need to adhere to rigid cinema schedules. This has led to a significant increase in the frequency and duration of movie consumption.

Moreover, OTT platforms offer a diverse range of content, catering to various tastes and preferences. From classic films to niche documentaries and international cinema, viewers can explore a wider spectrum of movies than ever before. This has empowered audiences to become more discerning consumers, demanding higher quality content and a greater variety of choices.

One of the most significant impacts of OTT platforms has been the rise of original content. Many platforms have invested heavily in producing exclusive shows and movies, creating unique and high-quality programming that often rivals traditional theatrical releases. This has led to a surge in quality content, giving viewers more options beyond traditional cinema.

The competition among OTT platforms has also driven up production costs, as platforms strive to create high-quality content to attract subscribers. This has led to a focus on big-budget productions and talent acquisition, impacting the overall movie industry. However, it has also resulted in increased investment in filmmaking, leading to the creation of more ambitious and innovative projects.

The rise of OTT platforms has intensified competition with theatrical releases. Some films are now being released directly to streaming services, bypassing traditional cinema distribution. This has led to a decline in box office revenue for certain films, particularly those that do not align with the preferences of streaming audiences.

However, the impact of OTT platforms on the movie market is not entirely negative. The increased exposure and reach provided by streaming services can help to promote films and expand their audience base. Additionally, the ability to access movies on demand can encourage repeat viewings and word-of-mouth recommendations.

The future of the movie industry will likely involve a combination of theatrical releases and OTT platforms. While the convenience and flexibility offered by streaming services are undeniable, the shared experience of watching a film in a cinema remains appealing to many audiences.

To thrive in the digital age, the movie industry will need to adapt to the changing preferences of viewers. This may involve exploring new distribution models, investing in innovative technologies, and focusing on creating high-quality content that resonates with audiences across multiple platforms.

In conclusion, the advent of OTT platforms has significantly impacted the film industry, transforming the way people consume movies and altering the dynamics of the market. While the challenges posed by streaming services are undeniable, the opportunities for growth and innovation are also significant. By understanding the evolving preferences of viewers and adapting their strategies accordingly, the movie industry can continue to thrive in the digital age.

PPP MQM-P, governance in Sindh, Nasir Hussain Shah, Ali Khurshidi MQM-P

KARACHI: A war of words erupted over governance in Sindh between the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the major opposition party Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Saturday.

The trade of barbs started when MQM-P Chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui took a jibe at the provincial government for what he called neglecting Karachi, saying that the mega city contributes a major chunk of both taxes and donations.

Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah hit back at the MQM-P chief and said, “MQM-P took donations in the form of sacrificial hides.”

Syed Nasir Hussain Shah  defended the PPP’s record, stating, “The donations to our hospitals are being spent on public welfare. Where did you spend yours? You deny every good act by the PPP government. MQM-P must understand that they no longer control Karachi.”

He emphasised that the Sindh government has invested Rs30 billion in Jinnah Hospital, NICVD, and NICH, and questioned, “Who stripped Karachi of its vibrancy, literary gatherings, and educational activities? Karachi has now moved beyond hatred, narrow-mindedness, and despair.”

In a fiery rebuttal, Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Ali Khurshidi, slammed the PPP’s Sindh government, claiming that “every child knows the tale of their corruption.

Ali Khurshidi responded to Syed Nasir Hussain Shah with an accusation that the ruling PPP of endemic corruption, claiming that every child in the province is aware of the government’s ‘corruption’.

“In Sindh, if corruption is the goal, development takes place. In the rest of the world, development leads to corruption.”

Ali Khurshidi further alleged that the Sindh government has turned corruption into an industry, with annual reports on corruption reading like tales of “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.”

The opposition leader questioned, “Nasir Hussain Shah should tell us how many Karachi youth have been employed in the past 15 years? Karachi’s hospitals, roads, parks, and schools are being built with World Bank loans. The province’s ruined infrastructure, and collapsing health and education systems, are witnesses to the government’s corruption.”

He criticised the governance in Sindh and asked the reasons from the Sindh Government for failing to provide water, sewage system, education, and jobs to Karachi and other cities, warning PPP ministers and feudal lords to think carefully before making statements against the MQM.

Khurshidi criticised the PPP, questioning, “Nasir Hussain Shah should tell us how many jobs have been given to Karachi’s youth in the past 15 years? Karachi’s hospitals, roads, parks, and schools are being built with World Bank loans. The dilapidated infrastructure and failing health and education systems are evidence of the provincial government’s corruption.”

He warned PPP ministers and feudal lords to be cautious in their statements against the MQM, stating that the government has failed to provide essential services and employment in Karachi and other cities.

The heated exchange between the two leaders highlights the deepening political divide as both sides continue to trade barbs over governance in Sindh.

Another, auto parts manufacturer, shuts down plant, Pakistan

KARACHI: The auto sector in Pakistan faces another blow as Bolan Casting Limited, a manufacturer of bus and truck parts, has announced the indefinite shutdown of its production plant, ARY News reported on Friday.

This decision follows the recent closures of the Suzuki Karsaz plant and Millat Tractor, marking a troubling trend in the industry.

In a letter addressed to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, Bolan Casting Limited cited a significant decline in the sales of trucks and buses, leading to severe financial difficulties.

The lack of demand has forced the company’s management to halt operations for an indefinite period, effective from August 26, 2024.

The shutdown of Bolan Casting’s plant underscores the broader challenges faced by the industry, raising alarms about the future of auto manufacturing in the country.

Sri Lanka visa-free, Saudi Arabia, visa-free for Saudis

In a move to bolster tourism and strengthen bilateral ties, the Sri Lankan government has announced a new policy granting visa-free entry to nationals from 35 countries, including key Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

This policy, set to commence on October 1st, 2024, will allow travellers from these nations to enjoy a 30-day stay in Sri Lanka without the need for a visa, and this arrangement is slated to last for six months.

Collins Jumaisi: Kenya police offer reward for escaped serial killer suspect

Collins Jumaisi: Kenya police offer reward for escaped serial killer

Kenya police offered a cash reward on Thursday for information leading to the arrest of Collins Jumaisi, a suspected serial killer, who escaped from a Nairobi police cell.

Police launched a manhunt on Tuesday after Collins Jumaisi, who is accused of murdering and dismembering dozens of women, broke out of a police station in an upmarket area of the Kenyan capital along with 12 Eritreans.

Five officers appeared in court on Wednesday suspected of aiding Jumaisi’s escape and have been freed on a 200,000 Kenyan shilling ($1,500) bond, despite prosecutors seeking an order to keep them in custody for 14 days.

The magistrate dismissed the prosecutor’s arguments that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had yet to retrieve surveillance footage.

The 33-year-old Jumaisi, described by police as a “vampire, a psychopath”, was arrested last month after the gruesome discovery of a number of mutilated female bodies in a rubbish dump in Mukuru slum area in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Police say he has confessed to murdering 42 women over a two-year period from 2022, with his wife his first victim, but the suspect has claimed he was tortured after his arrest.

Officers said Jumaisi and the other men escaped by cutting through a wire mesh roof where he was being held, before scaling a perimeter wall.

“A significant cash reward will be provided to anyone with credible information leading to the suspect’s arrest,” the DCI said, without specifying an amount.

It is the second time in barely six months that a suspect in a high-profile case has escaped from custody in Nairobi.

The latest twist to the grisly story has appalled many Kenyans, with the bodies also found just 100 metres (yards) from a police station.

Kenya’s police watchdog, the Independent Police Oversight Authority, has said it was looking into whether there was any police involvement or a “failure to act to prevent” the killings.

Kenyan police are often accused by rights groups of carrying out unlawful killings or running hit squads, but few have faced justice.

Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 moved from Bangladesh

ICC, Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Bangladesh, UAE,

The International Cricket Council has announced moving the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

While the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will continue as the host of the event, all the games of the marquee event will be played in UAE, ICC said in a statement on Tuesday.

The ninth edition of the tournament is scheduled for October with Dubai and Sharjah set to host all games.

“It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event,” ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said in a statement.

While thanking the BCB for exploring all avenues to try to host the event in Bangladesh, Allardice said that travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that it was not feasible.

“However, they will retain hosting rights. We look forward to taking an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future,” the ICC chief executive stated.

“I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026,” Allardice concluded.

Australia are the defending champions after the Meg Lanning-led side beat South Africa in the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023.
